Homily: 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time,
YR A
“Stop Your Grumbling”
by Fr. William Holtzinger
Sept. 18, 2005
When was the last time you complained? When was the last time you felt envy
about something? When was the last time you saw a situation and felt that
it was unjust? When was the last time the words, “That’s not fair!” leaped
out of your mouth? Was it truly unjust? Maybe, eh? Are you sure? Were
you possibly seeking out your own welfare over another?
Jesus, in his parable, describes a
situation that would get him fired if he were working for an accounting
firm. In fact, his story would have shocked his hearers. Honestly, it
still is shocking today. Who would conduct business in such a way so as to
give equal pay for unequal labor? Who would reward those who have done
little to deserve it? It’s crazy.
And so it is. God’s love for us is
foolish in the eyes of the world. Yet, that is not unexpected. Recall the
words from the prophet:
...our God... is generous in forgiving.
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD.
As high as the heavens are above the
earth,
so high are my ways above your ways
and my thoughts above your thoughts.
And if we are to call ourselves
Christians, we best listen to these words! Who are we to think we can know
the mind of God? Yet, Jesus knows the Father and then tells us that we
should be generous in all we do. Our Lord’s sense of mercy far outreaches
our sensibilities.
Imagine now the last time you felt
treated unfairly. Imagine the last time you complained and spread your
discontent to the people around you. Imagine the last time someone (other
than yourself) unworthily got promoted or given accolades for something they
didn’t do. In each situation, the temptation to sin has made itself present
to your heart. And if you ever gave in, know that this Gospel is for you,
for God will be generous to even you.
